The Faces of Elderberry Commons

Not just neighbors—a collection of stories.

We are a vibrant group of active adults (55+) who started as strangers and are growing into a community. We didn’t just set out to find a piece of land; we set out to find a better way to live.

At Elderberry Commons, our neighborhood is a reflection of the people who call it home. Whether we are discussing shared goals or sharing a laugh, we are building more than houses—we are building a culture of connection.

What Life Looks Like Here

A Culture of Creativity

While we might not have a full theater, we certainly have the talent. Our circle includes:

  • A Reader’s Theater leader and a Marimba player.

  • Fans of the opera, symphony, and ballet.

  • A basket-maker and lifelong vocal students.

  • The Vision: Group treks to local plays and "Common House Cinema" nights for independent films.

Built for Movement

We believe in staying active to stay young. You’ll find us hiking mountain trails, cycling, cross-country skiing, or even snorkeling. Whether it’s a daily walk around the city or a group hike, there is always someone here to encourage you to "get moving."

Citizens of the World

We are a group of lifelong travelers. One member has visited 40 countries, another has lived on four continents, and several have immersed themselves in 6+ languages. We value the perspective that comes from seeing how the rest of the world lives.

Rooted in Nature

Many of us are passionate gardeners. From a King County Master Gardener who volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House to those who find joy in "puttering" and forest restoration, our grounds will always be blooming. Expect a community garden where we can get our hands dirty together.

Quiet Nooks & Deep Discussions

When the Pacific Northwest rain sets in, we retreat to our books. With members juggling multiple book clubs and two newspapers a day, our site is designed with cozy corners for reading and open spaces for debating the latest bestseller.

Our Core Values

The pillars of our community.

  • A balance of private "alone time" and shared laughter with neighbors and pets.

  • Green building principles, healthy food, and a walkable site close to transit.

  • A clear, fair process where every voice is heard and respected.

  • Respecting our differences while remaining informed supporters of social justice.

  • Creating homes and grounds that promote comfort, beauty, and tranquility.

Come Grow With Us

While our current members range from age 70 to 89, Elderberry Commons welcomes anyone 55+ who is looking for a mentally and physically active lifestyle.
