Frequently Asked Questions
Where will Elderberry Commons be located? At this time we are actively seeking a site. Our hope is to locate in North Seattle area.
What will a home in Elderberry Commons cost? We don’t know exact cost yet. We view cohousing to be “missing middle housing”, likely costing somewhat less than local median market-rate home prices.
What would be expected of me if I were to join Elderberry Commons? In cohousing everyone is expected to participate in the ongoing community including maintenance tasks, common meals preparation and non-physical roles like committee membership or leadership. You would be expected to uphold the community values and live together with active intent to foster vibrant community.
How are decisions made? The community is self-governing, using an informed consent model called Sociocracy. Some decisions will be delegated to committees; others will involve the whole community.

What about pets? We have not yet established an official pet policy, although some members do wish to have pets.
Why cohousing just for seniors? We all enjoy children…. on our terms. At this stage of life, we wish to live among peers in a mutually supportive community. The advantages are many … companionship, healthy lifestyle, lower costs. Visit the Senior Cohousing section of the national cohousing association for much more: www.cohousing.org
What size will the homes be? We will likely have two or three home plans available ranging from 650 – 1200 sq. ft. These will be one or two-bedroom units. We may include a few studio units.
How much will the HOA dues be? We don’t know yet. Monthly dues will be assessed to cover utilities, insurance and maintenance of home exteriors and all common buildings and spaces.
How do I join and become a community member? First, meet with a community member who can bring you up to current time and help you determine whether joining Elderberry Commons is a good fit for you. Then, if interested, attend our twice monthly meetings and begin to participate in our development process and contribute to our modest pre-development costs.
